DISTRICT COUNCIL OF PAMPLEMOUSSES / RIVIERE-DU-REMPART
The Pamplemousses / Riviere-Du-Rempart District Council, commonly known as District Council North (DCN), includes the geographical districts of Pamplemousses and Riviere-Du-Rempart.It administers an area of about 400 square km, grouping some 228,000 people, and includes 36 Village Councils. Each of these Village Council is represented at the District Council by one member.
Pamplemousses is sub-divided into 17 Village Council areas: Arsenal, Baie-Du-Tombeau, Calebasses, Congomah, Creve Coeur, D'Epinay, Fond Du Sac, Le Hochet, Long Mountain, Morcellement-St-Andre, Notre Dame, Pamplemousses, Plaines Des Papayes, Pointe Aux Piments, Terre Rouge, Triolet and Villebague.
Pamplemousses district comprises of different places of interest like the Botanical Garden, which is said to be the third most beautiful garden in the world and where a special tree known as the 'Talipot' can be found. It is said that it blossoms only once and then dies away.
Pamplemousses is also known for its modern hospital SSR National Hospital, its home for elderly people run by the Brothers of Saint Jean de Dieu. A " Skin Diseases Infirmary" is also at the public's service.
The north has some of the most attractive coastlines of the island and the tourism industry of the island has developed rapidly. Most of the best five star resorts are to be found in this area, among other hotels like: Hotel Le Cannonier, Villa Pointe Aux Biches, Trou Aux Biches Hotel, Royal Palm, Victoria, Club Med, Le Mauricia etc.
Riviere-DuRempart, on its side, is sub-divided into 19 Village Council Areas: Amaury, Amitie, Belle Vue Maurel, Cap Malheureux, Cottage, Esperance Trebuchet, Goodlands, Grand Gaube, Grand Baie, Mapou, Petit Raffray, Piton, Plaines Des Roches, Poudre D'Or Hamlet, Poudre D'Or Village, Riviere-Du-Rempart, Roches Noires, Roches Terre and The Vale.
Riviere-Du-Rempart, for its part, is known for the cultivation of aquatic plants such as water cress and 'Brede Songe'. The district abounds in caves and monuments like the stone monument in memory of the shipwreck of the Saint Geran.The district of Riviere-Du-Rempart also comprises of numerous hotels namely: Le Grand Gaube, Merville, Island View and Royal Palm.
The Pamplemousses / Riviere-Du-Rempart District Council obtained approval for its coat of arms on the 26th July 1973 at the 105th Dictrict Council meeting of the 6th session, under the Chairmanship of Mr. K Toofanee.
