The department which is constituted of Four Specific Units is headed by the Head of works, an Engineer and is comprised of a Chief Works inspector, 2 Senior works inspectors, 3 works inspectors and 2 Foremen.
About 20% of the annual Council’s Budget is allocated to this department for its functioning.
The objective of the Works Department under the jurisdiction of the District Council North is to provide its public better services and it has grouped its human resources in teams to carry out works within the District Council Area.
- ROAD UNIT
It is responsible for the construction, Maintenance and Repairs of all roads falling under the jurisdiction of the Council
- PUBLIC WORKS UNIT.
It is responsible for the maintenance of traffic centers, market fairs, public gardens, public toilets, bus shelters, District Council buildings, Cremation grounds and crematorium, etc.
- STREET LIGHTING UNIT
It is responsible for the fixing and repairs of street lanterns in the 36 villages including Public Beaches.
- BUILDING UNIT
It is responsible for the processing of applications and issue of Building permits and Permits for Electric motors.

Regulations as per Local Government Act 1897 and subsequently as amemded:
In the prresent regulations, the following words and expressions shall have the meanings hereinafter assigned to them
''Council" means the District Council of Pamplemousses/Riviere-du-Rempart;
"public way" means any road which the public have or shall have right to use and includes all public places, thoroughfares, carriageways, cartways, horseways, footways, cause-ways, and lanes.

(1) subject to subsection every Inspector of a local authority

shall have the powers, privileges and immunities and perform the duties of a police officer in the execution of all summonses and orders issued in relation to any offence against a law relating to a local authority or an offence committed within the limits of the boundaries of the towns, districts and villages as under any enactment specified in the First Schedule;
