Pamplemousses and Riviere-Du-Rempart are twin districts in one. These two districts are spread over an area of 126 Square miles in the north of Mauritius, and their headquarters is found at Mapou, an important village in Riviere-Du-Rempart. Apart from the District Council Office, a District Court, a sub-office of the Ministry of Public Infrastructure, the District Employment office and a unit of the Agricultural Research and Extension Unit is also found here.
The name of Pamplemousses originates from the "Pomelo" trees which were abundant during the French colonisation of the Island.
La Nicoliere reservoir, the Botanical Gardens of Pamplemousses, Le Canonnier Hotel, Villa Pointe Aux Biches, Calamar Maritim Hotel, Trou-aux-biches Hotel, and Plm Azur Hotel, the aquarium of Trou-aux-Biches, the sugar estates of Beau Plan and Belle Vue Mauricia are found in Pamplemousses district.
This district is flat at the coastal regions, becoming sloppy and undulating further in the interior regions like Congomah, Les Mariannes, Long Mountain and Creve Coeur. It has an altitude ranging from 0-530 m.
The district of Pamplemousses is humid with annual rainfall varying from 800 - 1800 mm.
The sloppy and mountainous areas in the region of Long Mountain and Creve Coeur get the highest rainfall.
Riviere-du-Rempart was named after the abrupt banks of the river which flows there.
The district of Riviere-du-Rempart is mainly flat with altitude ranging from 0-150 m from the sea level.
If the land at Riviere-du-Rempart is suitable for sugarcane, foodcrops and fruit production, that of Pamplemousses is suitable for foodcrops, fruits and ornamentals production. Another special feature of these districts is the northern coast which stretches from Baie-du-Tombeau, North of Port-Louis, to Grand Gaube. It is one of the islands principal playgrounds with kilometres of white beach caressed by turquoise sea.
